As a young girl, my parents would take me to the strawberry fields every summer. We would run into the fields to see who could fill their basket fastest. I would never win because more strawberries would go in my mouth than in my basket. No wonder strawberries are still one of my favorite fruits to this day. Here is one of my favorite strawberry recipes and why, as a dietitian, I recommend eating California strawberries!

California strawberries are in peak season and readily available right now (and when local strawberries are off-season!). You can find organic and conventionally grown strawberries from California at grocery and natural products stores.


California strawberries never go bad in my house because they are a perfect addition to any snack or meal. Smoothies, breakfast toasts, pancakes / French toast toppings, salads, ice cream or sorbet just to name a few. They take little effort to prepare and enhance any meal.

Source of vitamin C

Vitamin C is crucial in a plant-based diet because it helps with the absorption of iron from plants. This is why I recommend that vegans or vegetarians add vitamin C to their meals.

We often associate vitamin C with oranges, but did you know a serving of 8 strawberries contain just as much? They both contain around 100 mg per cup, which is more than the recommended daily amount of vitamin C in a cup. Vitamin C also helps heal wounds and supports our immune system!

Source of fiber

Strawberries are also a source of fiber, about 3.4g per cup of sliced strawberries. Diets high in fiber help our digestive system function properly. It also protects against many chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

Servings: 1


  • 1 1/4 cup California strawberries
  • 1 banana frozen
  • 1/4 cup vanilla soy milk
  • 10 g dark chocolate chopped
  • 1 tbsp. almond butter
  • 1 tsp. hemp seeds


  • In a food processor or blender, add 1 cup of California strawberries (keep ¼ for garnish), 1 banana and ¼ cup of soy milk. Add less milk if you want your smoothie to be thicker.
  • Blend until smooth.
  • Pour it into a bowl and add the toppings.
