Chelsey Ng

Online Plant-Based Dietitian Practicing Across Alberta

Hi! I'm Chelsey, a Registered Plant-Based Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator who supports vegan, vegetarian, flexitarian, and plant-based clients through practical, evidence-based nutrition care.

Diabetes

As a Certified Diabetes Educator, I work with clients managing diabetes, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and other blood sugar concerns. My approach is practical and personalized, helping clients understand how factors such as food choices, meal timing, and much more.

Weight Management

My approach to weight-related goals is evidence-based, personalized, and centred on lasting, sustainable change rather than short-term solutions. I take the time to understand each client’s health history, eating habits, lifestyle, preferences, and goals before working collaboratively to create a plan.

Balanced Plant-Based Eating

I support vegan, vegetarian, and plant-based clients in creating balanced meals that promote steady energy, adequate nutrient intake, and overall well-being. My approach includes practical meal planning, label-reading guidance, education, and realistic strategies tailored to your culture, budget, schedule, and food preferences.

Chronic Disease Management

I help clients manage chronic health concerns by showing them how nutrition can support their broader care plan. This may involve creating balanced plant-based meals, meeting energy and nutrient needs, and developing practical nutrition strategies that are realistic and manageable in everyday life.

IBS & Digestive Problems

I support clients experiencing digestive concerns such as IBS, IBD, colitis, gastroparesis, ostomy-related needs, short bowel syndrome, constipation, bloating, and potential nutrient deficiencies. Having personal experience with IBS, I also understand how frustrating and disruptive digestive symptoms can be.

Sports Nutrition

I have delivered sports nutrition education to the University of Alberta Pandas women’s basketball team through both group presentations and individualized support. Topics have included performance fuelling, hydration, recovery nutrition, game-day strategies, nutrition while travelling, and injury prevention.

Pregnancy & Gestational Diabetes

I have experience supporting clients with prenatal nutrition and gestational diabetes. My approach begins with understanding each client’s current knowledge, priorities, daily routines, and monitoring needs, then providing practical guidance that supports the health of both the parent and baby.

Prenatal Nutrition

I help clients strengthen their nutrition before and throughout pregnancy, with support related to supplementation, meeting nutrient needs, and creating balanced plant-based meals.

Eating Disorders

I have experience working in both inpatient and outpatient eating disorder settings. My approach is patient-centred, weight-neutral, and grounded in meeting each client where they are. I focus on reducing pressure, understanding the realities of their daily life, and providing care that feels safe, collaborative, and responsive to their individual needs.

Intuitive Eating

Across my work in weight management, metabolic health, and chronic disease care, I often focus on helping clients better understand their bodies. I support them in recognizing body cues, exploring the factors that influence those cues, and developing eating patterns that feel more connected, informed, and sustainable.

Chelsey and Her Journey with Plant-Based Nutrition

What motivated you to become a dietitian?

I was always the kid who read food labels. Growing up in the early 2000s, I was surrounded by messages about body image, dieting, and weight, which made me aware of those pressures from an early age.

I also played sports in high school and began to notice a gap in the support available to athletes beyond performance alone. Athletes were expected to train hard, compete, and consistently show up, but there was not always enough guidance on how to fuel effectively, recover properly, and care for their bodies over the long term.

Later, I worked with an Olympic weightlifting coach who was vegan, which deepened my interest in the connection between nutrition, performance, health, and plant-based eating. Dietetics became a way for me to combine my interests in food, science, sport, and health while helping people feel more informed, supported, and connected to their bodies.

Why are you plant-based?

I have been vegetarian since I was 11. I never particularly enjoyed meat, and even as a child, I would often remove the hamburger patty from my burger. As I got older and began reading ingredient lists more carefully, I became increasingly aware of how frequently animal-derived ingredients appeared in foods where I did not expect them.

At 17, I transitioned to a fully vegan diet for ethical reasons, particularly because of my concern for animals and the environment. I remained vegan for eight years before worsening digestive symptoms led me to liberalize my diet so I could better meet my nutrient needs while also limiting gluten and wheat.

My experience with plant-based eating has shown me that nutrition is not one-size-fits-all. I believe it is important to be mindful of what we put into our bodies, while also finding an approach that is sustainable, nourishing, and supportive of each person’s health and long-term well-being.

How would you describe your approach?

My priority is always to ensure that clients feel heard, understood, and supported. I never want anyone to feel as though they are receiving a generic plan or that I am simply following a script. I take the time to listen to each client’s concerns, understand the realities of their daily life, and collaborate with them to find an approach that feels practical and achievable.

I also use a holistic approach to nutrition, recognizing the many factors that can influence a person’s health, behaviours, and relationship with food.
